Two high-intensity improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered on Monday, May 11, from two abandoned houses in Manipur\u2019s Bishnupur district, weeks after a deadly bomb blast in the same area killed two children, officials said. The explosives were found in two houses belonging to members of the Meitei community at Tronglaobi Maning Leikai Guru Khana village under the jurisdiction of Moirang Police Station. The village, which once had nearly 50 households, was largely deserted after ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, leading to arson and displacement. Residents had recently started returning to clean and repair their homes under peace and reconciliation efforts initiated by the state government. After receiving information, Moirang Police called the CID (Technical) Bomb Disposal Squad. The team arrived and safely defused both IEDs at around 12:45 pm. Police said the bombs were later handed over to the police station for further investigation. Local residents alleged that suspected armed militants may have planted the explosives to threaten families trying to resettle in the village. Police identified the owners of the houses as Ningthoujam Ibomcha (54) and Rambo (36). A case has been registered and an investigation is underway. The recovery comes amid rising tensions after the April 7 bomb attack in the same village, where a five-year-old boy and his five-month-old sister were killed. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing that case. State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam recently said five people had been arrested. Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023 have killed around 260 people and displaced nearly 60,000 others across the state. In a separate incident, police reported a suspected grenade attack at the residence of an IndiGo Airlines manager in Imphal East district early Monday. Police said unidentified persons allegedly threw a bomb at the house of Ningthoujam Sunil, an IndiGo manager, at Kongpal Khaidem Leikai around 12:45 am. However, it failed to explode. Later, based on CCTV footage, a Bomb Disposal Squad recovered the explosive, identified as a high-explosive hand grenade, from inside the house. Earlier this month, the banned insurgent group Kangleipak Communist Party claimed responsibility for an IED blast outside the cargo terminal of Imphal International Airport on May 3.
