Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed and several others injured after suspected militants ambushed a patrol team in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Monday afternoon.
According to defence sources, the attack took place around 1:30 pm at Nungshangkong, about 15 km from Ukhrul town. The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to a hospital for treatment.
Security forces have launched a massive counter-operation to track down the attackers. A senior defence official said the militants were being pursued and that an exchange of fire was still underway.
Condemning the attack, Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed condolences to the families of the slain personnel. He said the government would not tolerate such acts of violence and assured that those responsible would be arrested and punished in accordance with the law.
State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam also mourned the deaths, stating that such attacks undermine efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-hit state. He reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Ukhrul district, which has a Naga-majority population, has witnessed several incidents of unrest since February this year, including civilian killings, arson and road blockades.
In a separate incident on Sunday evening, unidentified gunmen opened fire at Thingkhojang village in Kangpokpi district, injuring two civilians, including an eight-year-old girl. The injured were shifted to Imphal for medical treatment.
Following the incident, the Kuki CSO Working Committee, South West Sadar Hills, called for a 24-hour total shutdown along National Highway-37 in protest.
Meanwhile, the Manipur government extended financial assistance of \u20b91 lakh each to 26 internally displaced persons (IDPs) suffering from chronic illnesses, including kidney disease and cancer.
