Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the death toll due to floods could rise as rescue teams as many affected areas still remain inaccessible.
The floods have claimed 47 lives so far. Sivasagar has recorded the highest number of deaths at 21, followed by Charaideo (10), Jorhat (8), Dhemaji (3), Karbi Anglong (2), Golaghat (2) and Sonitpur (1). Eight people remain missing, including six from Sivasagar and one each from Dhemaji and Charaideo.
“These figures are based on what was reported till last midnight. Many people are not in a position to report to us because we are disconnected from them. In many areas, rescue teams are struggling to reach marooned people. So, I think the death toll and the number of missing persons will increasr,” the Chief Minister said.
“In many places, we have shut down the electrical transformers because the water level is above the transformers. If electricity remains in operation, it will cause accidents. Similarly, in many areas, the telephone and mobile networks are working, while in many other areas, mobile services are not working. As of now, 40,000 households are not receiving electricity. Earlier, the number was 1,60,000, but it has now been reduced,” he said.
According to the latest flood bulletin, 10,63,216 people have been affected across 25 districts between April 29 and July 23. The floods have impacted 77 revenue circles and 2,023 villages.
A total of 401 houses were completely destroyed in the disaster and another 1,856 partially damaged. Officials said 28,912 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas as rescue operations continue.
Authorities have set up 162 relief camps, where 41,264 people are staying, along with 1,072 relief distribution centres to assist those affected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
