Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has directed security agencies to strengthen surveillance and tighten security along vulnerable stretches of the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border amid growing concerns over illegal infiltration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The directive was issued during a high-level security review meeting involving the Meghalaya Government, Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force (BSF). Chairing the meeting, Tynsong said infiltration attempts were being detected almost every day and stressed the need for increased ground-level vigilance by both the BSF and the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The discussions focused on infiltration-related challenges, difficult terrain, inadequate border infrastructure and reports that some local residents were allegedly assisting illegal crossings. Tynsong noted that many of those intercepted were ordinary Bangladeshi citizens seeking to migrate and settle elsewhere rather than individuals entering with malicious intent. However, he emphasized that unauthorized movement across an international border could not be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Security agencies have been instructed to adopt stronger preventive measures. While declining to disclose operational details regarding allegations of local involvement, Tynsong said directions had been issued to the police, district administration and the BSF to address the issue effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the major concerns highlighted during the meeting was the presence of unfenced stretches along the border, particularly in East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts. According to Tynsong, incomplete fencing, difficult terrain and poor accessibility have made several sections of the border highly vulnerable to infiltration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also did not rule out the possibility of intermediaries or agents facilitating illegal border crossings. Responding to questions about infiltration despite BSF deployment, Tynsong explained that Meghalaya\u2019s hilly terrain presents far greater surveillance challenges than the plains of states such as West Bengal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said difficult accessibility, limited infrastructure and poor nighttime visibility hamper continuous monitoring of the border. In some areas, security personnel are unable to clearly observe locations even a short distance away, making effective surveillance difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite these challenges, Tynsong maintained that the BSF and Meghalaya Police remain actively engaged in preventing infiltration. The government’s goal, he said, is to reduce such incidents to zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To strengthen local monitoring, Meghalaya has activated Village Defence Parties (VDPs) in villages located along the international border. These groups are working closely with traditional leaders and village headmen to improve surveillance and intelligence gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
District administrations have also been directed to consult traditional institutions in vulnerable areas before implementing additional measures. Tynsong further stated that curfew could be imposed in sensitive locations whenever deemed necessary after consultations with local traditional authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Meghalaya-Bangladesh border presents unique operational challenges due to its rugged landscape of hills, forests, valleys and remote settlements.
