A serious allegation of mental harassment and verbal abuse has been leveled against Dronacharya Award-winning coach Naval Singh by Paralympics gold medalist Sumit Antil. Following this, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has formally filed a complaint. It is noteworthy that Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has also come forward in support of this allegation.
According to Sumit’s complaint, Coach Naval Singh crossed all limits of professional decency and used abusive language toward them. He stated:
“The coach intentionally used to call us ‘handicapped’ and abuse us verbally. He would send us to motels so that we would leave [the sport] and go back home. He used to mentally harass us constantly.”
Although the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has not taken any official action yet, the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has also been informed of the matter. Sumit and the AFI have alleged that Naval Singh is not a regular employee of the Sports Authority of India. Currently, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is involved in the national coaching matters. The federation has stated that they will bring this issue to the attention of the higher authorities soon.
