Due to the increase in the number of teams and being jointly hosted across three nations, the 2026 World Cup is set to be a memorable edition. However, the upcoming tournament will also reach a special milestone in World Cup history. The 1,000th match in World Cup history will be played during this very tournament. Beginning its journey in 1930 with the Uruguay World Cup, a total of 964 matches have been played up to the 2022 World Cup. This time, the number of matches will be 104. The milestone of the 1,000th match will be reached during the group stage itself.
The match to be played between Japan and Tunisia on June 20 at the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico, will touch the 1,000 mark. Opened in 2015, this stadium has a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators. There is massive demand among fans for this 1,000th match of the World Cup, with the majority being Mexican spectators. Interestingly, Mexico’s name was also associated with the very first match of the World Cup. In the first match of the 1930 World Cup, France and Mexico faced each other.
