AASU Opposes VIP Facility Plan at Guwahati University Amid Budget Concerns
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has raised objections to Guwahati University’s decision to spend ₹2.08 crore on the construction of a VIP dining hall, kitchen and staff accommodation within the university’s guest house premises, citing concerns over the institution’s financial condition.
AASU president Utpal Sarma criticised the project, stating that while improved infrastructure is necessary for the university, priority should be given to academic activities and essential requirements, especially during a period of financial difficulty.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma shared details of the tender and said the contract for the project had already been awarded. He questioned the decision to allocate a significant amount of funds for guest house facilities when the university is reportedly facing financial challenges.
Sarma clarified that AASU supports the development of world-class infrastructure at Gauhati University and would not oppose large-scale investments if sufficient funds were available for academic programmes and other institutional needs. However, he expressed concern over spending on VIP facilities amid financial constraints.
The AASU president also stated that he would bring the matter to the attention of the Education Department of the Assam Government, seeking further consideration of the project and the university’s financial priorities. The issue has sparked discussion over infrastructure spending, financial management and the allocation of resources in higher education institutions.
