In a crucial IPL match, Mumbai Indians are hoping for a turnaround against the in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad. The five-time champions’ current IPL campaign is at high risk.
With five losses in their first seven matches—including a crushing 103-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings—Mumbai Indians currently sit at the 9th position with only 4 points. Even though the team features four players from India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, the mediocre performances of Captain Hardik Pandya (3 wickets and 97 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (157 runs) have added to the team’s troubles. While Tilak Varma’s century helped break a four-match losing streak, the heavy loss to CSK has disrupted their momentum once again.
Jasprit Bumrah (2 wickets) has also failed to perform up to expectations. He has had to lead the attack with the new ball in two matches because other bowlers failed. Neither Trent Boult (1) nor Deepak Chahar (1) could be effective. The inability to take wickets in the powerplay has repeatedly allowed the opposition to take control against Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the absence of Rohit Sharma has created a significant void that Danesh Malewa has been unable to fill. Keshav Maharaj has joined the team in place of the injured Mitchell Santner. It also remains to be seen if Will Jacks gets an opportunity.
On the other side, Sunrisers Hyderabad believes they can finally win against Mumbai this time. They secured their second win of the season against Rajasthan Royals. Abhishek Sharma (380 runs) is back in his best form. Ishan Kishan (312) and Heinrich Klaasen (349) have also been among the runs. The return of Pat Cummins has given the team confidence.
Hyderabad’s assistant coach, James Franklin, said, “Whether the high-scoring matches are becoming monotonous is something only the fans can say. As a coach, I am trying to adapt to the current situation.” He added, “It seems the game is currently very high-risk for batters.” He hinted that slower deliveries might be effective in stopping Abhishek Sharma from the start. Franklin noted, “Abhishek plays very methodically; he knows what the opposition bowlers might do.
