Despite consistently putting up excellent performances in domestic cricket, is the path to return to the Indian national Test team closed for the country’s premier leading fast bowler, Mohammed Shami? The fast bowler was not included in the Indian squad announced for the one-off Test match to be held against Afghanistan. Following this, on Tuesday, after the chief selector of the Indian national cricket team, Ajit Agarkar, revealed the reason for not including Mohammed Shami in the squad, an impression has grown in everyone’s mind that the hero of many battles, Mohammed Shami, might not be seen in the Indian national Test team again. While clarifying the selector’s stance regarding Shami during an interaction with journalists after the announcement of the two squads for the ODI and Test series to be held against Afghanistan, he said that based on the information available to the selectors at this moment, it can be said that Shami’s body is currently suited for T20 cricket.
He also mentioned that Mohammed Shami has been participating in domestic cricket in the current season. However, from the information they have received regarding Shami’s fitness at this moment, it becomes certain that he is currently ready only for T20 cricket. Therefore, during the selection of the Test team, Mohammed Shami’s name did not even come up for discussion. It is worth mentioning that Mohammed Shami, who has claimed 197 international wickets across all formats for India, last played for the Indian national team in the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. On the other hand, although Jammu and Kashmir’s fast bowler Akib’s name was considered, he was not selected due to a lack of available spots.
