Amid mounting security challenges in Manipur, including rising tensions between Kuki and Naga groups, unresolved cases of missing and allegedly abducted persons, truckers’ strikes, and disruptions along key national highways, 1996-batch IPS officer Mukesh Singh arrived in Imphal on Saturday to assume charge as the state’s new Director General of Police (DGP).

Mukesh Singh will formally take over as Manipur’s police chief on June 1. Upon his arrival from New Delhi, he was received at Imphal Airport by senior police officials. He later paid a courtesy visit to Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who welcomed him to the state.

Mukesh Singh will succeed Rajiv Singh, a 1993-batch IPS officer who was appointed as Manipur DGP during the peak of the ethnic violence in June 2023. Following the completion of his tenure, Rajiv Singh has been transferred by the Centre and appointed Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat in New Delhi.

Before his new assignment, Mukesh Singh served as the police chief of Ladakh. The Central Government recently approved his inter-cadre deputation from the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre to the Manipur cadre for a period of three years. The appointment order was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

Officials said the new DGP assumes office at a critical time when efforts are underway to restore normalcy, strengthen law and order, and rebuild public confidence across the state. Ongoing security concerns, transport disruptions, and community tensions continue to pose significant challenges for the administration.

As he prepares to take charge, Mukesh Singh faces the task of reinforcing security mechanisms, ensuring safe movement along vital highways, and supporting ongoing initiatives aimed at maintaining peace and stability in Manipur.
