Cricketing World Mourns the Passing of West Indies Legend Sir Garfield Sobers at 89
The global cricketing community is in deep mourning following the passing of West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers, widely revered as the greatest all-rounder in the history of the sport. Sobers passed away peacefully at his home in Barbados at the age of 89, just ten days shy of his 90th birthday. Confirming the news, Cricket West Indies paid a moving tribute to the icon, stating, “A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers.” Across a glittering 20-year international career spanning from 1954 to 1974, the exceptionally versatile left-hander redefined the dynamics of the game by mastering elegant batting, incisive pace, and multiple variations of spin, alongside legendary athletic fielding.
Statistically unmatched in his era, Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches, amassing 8,032 runs at a phenomenal average of 57.78, including 26 centuries, while capturing 235 wickets. His legendary unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 set a world record for the highest individual Test score that stood for 36 years. He also etched his name into sporting folklore in 1968 by becoming the first player in first-class history to hit six sixes in a single over while playing for Nottinghamshire.
