NFR Expands Connectivity with Vande Bharat Sleeper, Special Trains, and First Freight Run to Nepal
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a series of major connectivity and operational milestones in 2026, driven by the introduction of 14 pairs of new train services—including Vande Bharat Sleeper, Amrit Bharat, and Mail/Express trains—as well as the first MEMU service between Agartala and Karimganj. Demonstrating a 23 percent increase over last year, NFR operated 674 special train trips, including 92 designated to support flood-affected areas, alongside strengthening regular services with additional coaches. Passenger infrastructure saw widespread modernization with 230 reservation locations upgraded to a graphical user interface, integrated information systems added at eight stations, 10 new lifts, and 29 locations securing “Eat Right” certifications. On the freight side, loading surged by 7 percent from April to July 2026—led by massive growth in cement and dolomite—supported by the commissioning of seven new cargo terminals and completed track-linking to the Jogighopa Multi-Modal Logistics Park. Crucially, the network expanded its international footprint by dispatching India’s first-ever container train to Nepal in July 2026, underscoring NFR’s broader commitment to regional trade integration, operational efficiency, and enhanced passenger experience across the Northeast.
