Peace Accord Turned Karbi Anglong from Conflict to Progress: Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said the Karbi Peace Accord, signed five years ago, has significantly accelerated development in Karbi Anglong and helped transform the region from a history of conflict towards peace and prosperity. In a message marking the anniversary of the landmark agreement, Sarma described the 2021 accord as a turning point in Assam’s socio-political landscape, bringing an end to years of violence, killings and abductions linked to the demand for a separate Karbi homeland. The agreement was signed in New Delhi between the Centre, the Assam government and five major Karbi insurgent groups. According to Sarma, the accord addressed long-standing aspirations of the Karbi people while preserving Assam’s territorial integrity. He said the peace agreement has created opportunities for infrastructure development, targeted tribal welfare, youth empowerment, arts and local entrepreneurship, contributing to the region’s progress across various growth indicators. Sarma hailed the spirit of peace and unity behind the agreement, saying it demonstrated how dialogue can help build a resilient and prosperous future. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to accelerating development in Karbi Anglong, improving the welfare of its people and protecting the region’s distinct cultural identity. The chief minister said the progress achieved since the accord serves as an example of how sustained dialogue and cooperation can turn areas affected by conflict into centres of opportunity and development.
