Controversy has erupted once again in Indian wrestling. Star wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s path to returning to the international arena after a major setback has encountered a massive hurdle. After returning from a long hiatus following the Olympics, she was expected to compete in the national selection trials in Lucknow. However, Vinesh was unable to participate in the competition, effectively ending her three-day quest to qualify.
The wrestling federation has issued a 15-page show-cause notice to Vinesh Phogat for allegedly violating discipline and rules during the national selection trials.
It is alleged that Vinesh attempted to manipulate the atmosphere at the trials. While the trials are scheduled to continue until June 26, it has been made clear that she will not be allowed to participate.
A major point of contention involves the rules set by United World Wrestling (UWW). According to the rules, a wrestler must adhere to a strict weight limit. Vinesh had reportedly failed to comply with the weight regulations during the Olympic qualifiers, which led to a previous controversy.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the ad-hoc committee appointed to oversee the wrestling body have pointed out that Vinesh’s inability to follow the established protocols is a recurring issue.
On the other hand, there are claims from Vinesh’s side that this is a “politics of revenge,” suggesting that she is being deliberately targeted and prevented from competing due to her past protests and outspoken nature against the federation’s leadership.
The federation has demanded an explanation from the wrestler regarding these disciplinary breaches, while her supporters see this as a systematic attempt to push a legendary athlete into retirement.
