Amid a global energy crisis and growing tensions in the Middle East, India has taken a major step towards self-reliance. A historic tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed today in New Delhi among the Government of India, the Government of Assam, and the Government of Nagaland under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

This agreement will pave the way for exploration and exploitation of crude oil, natural gas, and valuable mineral resources in the border and disputed areas of both states. On this historic occasion, Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the agreement will strengthen the country’s energy security, reduce dependence on imports, and help increase oil production capacity in the Northeast by more than tenfold.

In his address, Home Minister Amit Shah said that this agreement will prove to be a milestone in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Prosperous Northeast, Developed Northeast.” He praised the Chief Ministers of both states, saying that the two states have set aside their decades-old differences and apprehensions, prioritizing national interest and choosing the path of cooperation.

The Nagaland Government has now given consent for oil and gas exploration across the entire state. AFSPA will be lifted from the Northeast within the next year. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took a very positive approach to the issue, rightly stating that this is not a win-lose situation for any one state, but rather a victory for all of India.

Amit Shah noted that the Northeast has vast reserves of mineral resources and hydrocarbons, but these have remained untapped due to various inter-state disputes and law-and-order issues. According to estimates, a single oil field alone has the potential to yield recoveries worth more than ₹15,000 crore, which would transform the economies of both states.
