Fake Currency Probe Deepens After Accused Injured in Police Operation in Guwahati
Guwahati, July 4: The investigation into an alleged fake Indian currency racket in Assam took a new turn after one of the two arrested accused sustained a bullet injury during a police operation in Guwahati in the early hours of Saturday.
The accused, identified as Debojit Deori and Ajay Biswakarma, both from Deorigaon in Dhemaji district, were arrested on July 2 after Dispur Police intercepted a Maruti Swift Dzire near Nagaland House at Six Mile based on specific intelligence inputs.
According to police, the suspects were allegedly transporting counterfeit Indian currency when they were intercepted. During a follow-up operation, an exchange of fire reportedly took place, in which Ajay Biswakarma suffered a bullet injury to his right leg.
He was immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Police said preliminary interrogation suggested that the two accused were allegedly involved in similar activities earlier and may be linked to a larger counterfeit currency network operating in the region.
During the search of the vehicle, investigators recovered a black backpack containing eight bundles of suspected fake ₹500 notes. Counterfeit currency with a face value of ₹2.56 lakh, along with other incriminating materials, was seized. The vehicle used by the accused has also been taken into police custody.
Meanwhile, the injured accused has allegedly claimed that some police personnel were connected to the fake currency trade. The allegation has not been independently verified, and the authorities have not issued any official response.
Police said the investigation is continuing to trace the source of the counterfeit currency and identify others allegedly involved in the racket.
