Assam Governor Reviews Indian Red Cross Flood Relief Operations, Calls for Stronger Emergency Response
Assam Governor and President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, on Friday reviewed the organisation’s ongoing flood relief and humanitarian response during a high-level meeting held at Lok Bhavan.
The review meeting was attended by IRCS Assam State Branch General Secretary Deba Prasad Mishra, senior office-bearers of the organisation, and officials from the Governor’s Secretariat.
During the meeting, the Governor was briefed on the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken in flood-affected districts, particularly in Upper Assam, where large-scale flooding has affected thousands of families.
Officials informed the Governor that the Indian Red Cross Society has activated its district branches in the affected regions and deployed trained volunteers to provide humanitarian assistance. They said rapid needs assessments are being carried out while maintaining close coordination with district administrations, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and the Indian Red Cross Society’s national headquarters to ensure effective relief operations.
The Governor was also informed about the challenges in delivering emergency services, including temporary shelter, household relief materials, safe drinking water, healthcare, first aid and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) support to flood-hit communities.
Emphasising the need for a stronger disaster response, Acharya urged the Red Cross to further strengthen and streamline its emergency relief mechanism so that assistance reaches every affected person without delay.
He also highlighted the importance of taking preventive measures against the possible outbreak of water-borne and vector-borne diseases as floodwaters begin to recede.
Appreciating the dedication of the Red Cross volunteers and officials, the Governor assured the organisation of his full support in expanding its humanitarian efforts. He also said that any assistance required from the Central Government would be pursued through appropriate channels to facilitate timely relief and rehabilitation.
The meeting was also attended by Joint Secretary to the Governor Arindam Barua, PPS to the Governor Dr. S. N. Bhowmick, and other members of the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch.
