India’s First Woman PM Remembered on 41st Death Anniversary
“Indira Gandhi was a symbol of indomitable courage, firm determination and visionary leadership.” The Congress party paid deep tributes to the country’s first and only woman Prime Minister on her death anniversary in this manner. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge, former President Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi were present at Indira Gandhi’s memorial at Shakti Sthal in the capital and offered floral tributes.
Through social media platform X, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that Indira Gandhi’s unparalleled contribution in building a strong and progressive India will remain an enduring legacy for the country. Kharge mentioned that her supreme sacrifice in the interest of the unity and integrity of the nation will always remain alive in the memory of the countrymen. He also commented that Indira Gandhi’s dedication in building modern India will forever remain a source of inspiration.
Rahul Gandhi also sent an emotional message remembering his grandmother. Mentioning a Sanskrit shloka taught by his grandmother in childhood on social media, Rahul Gandhi said, “Sitting in your lap, holding both your hands, hearing in your voice I repeated these words – ‘Asato Ma Sadgamaya, Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya, Mrityorma Amritam Gamaya, Om Shanti Shanti Shanti’. Grandma, what a beautiful gift you gave me, which I never imagined.”
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also remembered the former Prime Minister with respect. Praising her grandmother’s personality, Priyanka Gandhi said, “She was as free as the sky, as deep as the sea, as tolerant as the earth and as bright as fire.”
Apart from Shakti Sthal, top leaders also paid tribute at the former official residence of Indira Gandhi at 1 Safdarjung Road, ‘Indira Gandhi Memorial’. It is worth mentioning that on October 31, 1984, the country’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was killed by her own security guards at her own residence.
