Four patients were injured after a section of the ceiling collapsed inside the Plastic Surgery department of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Thursday, triggering panic among patients, attendants and hospital staff.

According to preliminary information, a portion of the ceiling suddenly caved in and fell onto patients admitted to the ward. The incident created confusion inside the department before hospital staff rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to safety.

Hospital authorities immediately provided treatment to the injured patients and said all four are in stable condition.

Sources said the ceiling of the Plastic Surgery department had been in poor condition for a long time. The collapse is suspected to have been caused by prolonged structural deterioration and inadequate maintenance, though the exact reason is yet to be officially established.

The incident has once again raised questions over the upkeep of infrastructure at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, one of Assam’s largest government-run medical institutions.

Hospital authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the collapse and determine whether negligence or structural deficiencies led to the incident.
