Newlywed Woman Found Dead Near Dayang River, Husband and Father-in-Law Arrested
A newly married woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances near the Dayang River in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district, sparking widespread anger after her family alleged that she had been brutally assaulted before her death.
The deceased has been identified as Meena Kumari Chauhan, daughter of late Ram Awatar Chauhan and a resident of Cherapathar No. 1 under Kheroni Police Station. She was married to Rabindra Chauhan.
According to the woman’s family, her body was recovered from an area near the Dayang River in a partially undressed condition. They alleged that there were visible signs of severe assault on her face and further claimed that hot oil or water had been poured over her body before her death.
Police have arrested her husband, Rabindra Chauhan, and his father, Lalchand Chauhan, in connection with the case. The victim’s family has also alleged that other members of the husband’s family may have been involved. Police are searching for five other suspects who are reportedly absconding.
Following the post-mortem examination, a large number of villagers from areas under Mailoo Police Outpost and neighbouring localities gathered and demanded a speedy investigation and stringent punishment for those responsible.
On the evening of September 2, residents from the victim’s parental village and surrounding areas reportedly took her body to her husband’s residence at No. 2 Nawaibil (Lamshakhanj) and buried it inside the compound.
The gathering later turned tense, prompting police to fire one round to bring the situation under control.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage in the area. Local residents have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation and strict action against anyone found responsible. Police have intensified efforts to locate the remaining suspects as the investigation continues.
